Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. Proverbs 9:9-11 KJV
Growing older is easy in the sense that it simply happens over time. However, accepting the difficulties that often come as our bodies age is considerably more challenging and requires us to make a conscious choice on a daily or even hourly basis.
At ViewPointe Senior Living, we believe that every stage of our lives is a gift from God and can be used for His glory and our benefit. We hope that through God's strength and our service, residents here will be able to live to their full potential.
For this reason, we've compiled a few tips that we hope will help others embrace their elderhood and come to love this chapter of their lives.
Regardless of age, there are times when it feels like our bodies or minds betray us. These can leave us in an embarrassing and sometimes compromising situation that turns our cheeks pink and our ears red. Though the urge to laugh may not be natural in certain instances, those who can brush off discomfort with humor will find themselves and the folks around them happier and more relaxed.
Another good lesson to learn about laughter is to recognize when those around us are laughing with us and not at us. By sharing laughter during awkward moments, the people involved can focus on completing required tasks while still enjoying each other's company.
God gives each of us gifts, and as we age, it's only natural that we discover and hone more of the skills that come to us naturally. We also gain wisdom and knowledge through the many successes and failures we've experienced throughout our lives.
Though human nature makes it easier to fixate on the things that are a struggle to accomplish, individuals who push past this temptation can find their own ways to continue to serve God and others.
While vision loss or low stamina may make life difficult, these issues also can lead to a deeper awareness of others’ suffering, which can help them more readily accept our encouragement or advice.
A few more of the ways that we can put our years to use include:
Leading a Bible study, prayer group or book club
Mentoring grandchildren and local youth in music, art or life skills
Sharing child rearing and marriage advice with young adults
Helping a new resident in ViewPointe meet their neighbors and find their way around
