Life is uncertain and can be scary — it’s certainly one of the messages that seems to resound with people across the globe in 2020.
Choosing assisted living or another level of care at ViewPointe in Colorado Springs is one way seniors can combat the potential instability of life on earth. As a resident of the assisted living community, you can receive many positive encouragements and a foundation of health, security and fellowship. That includes services and amenities such as:
• Your own assisted living apartment
• Housekeeping and laundry to keep areas, including your home, clean
• Nutritious prepared meals and snacks
• Games and activities scheduled to promote time with others
• Help managing medication or other health needs
• Spiritual care, including worship times and options to meet one-on-one with a chaplain
While the caring staff of ViewPointe offer compassionate, professional services, when you choose our assisted living, you’re opting to live in a community run by a faith-based organization. That doesn’t mean you need to have a certain faith-based background; we have residents who hold many beliefs. But if you are a senior of faith, this may offer you some assurance and comfort.
We also believe that seniors can turn to the Bible at all times for many messages of comfort and wisdom. Here are five bits of wisdom seniors of faith can find in just one book of the Bible — 2 Corinthians.
Paul writes, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort…”(2 Cor. 1:3)
Paul goes on to say that God comforts us in our times of trouble. Why does he do this? First, because he loves us and wants us to turn to him during those times. But Paul says God also provides this comfort so that we can pass it on to others.
As a senior in an assisted living community, you’re in a unique position to accept this comfort and to pass it on. First, seek God’s comfort in all things: nervousness about moving into a new community, feelings of loneliness when you miss loved ones or struggles with health or the current nature of the world.
Second, share that comfort. Be willing to listen to neighbors as you dine together, offer to spend time having coffee once a week with someone or spend time talking about your faith with others.
Paul reminds the church at Corinth that God remained faithful to them always, and that faithfulness was brought to life in Christ. “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ.” (2 Cor. 1:20)
What was true for that ancient gathering of believers in Greece is true for seniors in assisted living communities today. God remains faithful to you no matter where you live, what age you are or what you are facing in life.
Paul makes a specific comparison between the person that is a body and the person that is a spirit. The body is like a jar of clay, which isn’t forever. But the person filled with the Spirit is being renewed toward eternal life.
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” (2 Cor. 4:16)
That’s true of all people who believe in and confess Christ. No matter where you are in your life’s journey on earth, you are being renewed into something new, and that is a truth that can excite and ignite seniors of faith.
Paul refers to himself and others as ambassadors of God appealing to the Corinthians. Seniors of faith may also be ambassadors — those who can appeal to others about God’s grace and desire for their lives.
In today’s culture, it can be tempting to avoid speaking out about such beliefs. But someone who has studied the Word for decades or has experienced God’s grace in other ways has something valuable to share with younger loved ones, assisted living staff or even other residents.
You don’t have to be a preacher or pastor to share this type of information. You might simply talk about your relationship with Jesus with your family or neighbors or encourage grandchildren to read Bible stories so you can talk about them together.
One of the final things Paul writes in this particular letter is, “Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice!” He wants the believers in Corinth to rejoice in their salvation and in the grace of God. He also wants them to show love and care for one another.
Choosing to make your life in an assisted living community opens some doors for you in this regard. You can rejoice in an active and vibrant life while caring for others in ways that make sense for you.
